Description

The Desktop Tech/Network Administrator role is to ensure proper Server, Network, and workstation operation so that end users can accomplish business tasks. This includes receiving, prioritizing, documenting, and actively resolving end user help requests. Problem resolution may involve the use of diagnostic and help request tracking tools, as well as require that the individual give in-person, hands-on help at the desktop level.  The person will also diagnose, resolve, and document hardware and software network problems in a timely and accurate fashion, and provide end user training and support where required. This position requires sound decision making, good technical judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision and the ability to lead others on technical projects. 

Responsibilities

·         Field incoming help requests from end users via both telephone and e-mail in a courteous manner.

·         Install, configure, test, maintain, monitor, and troubleshoot end user workstation hardware, software, networked peripheral devices, cabling, and networking hardware and software products.

·         Install, configure, test, maintain, monitor, and troubleshoot routers, switches, firewalls, and VPN devices under direction of Sr. Network Administrator.

·         Ability to effectively prioritize, plan, and execute Backup/Restore procedures for servers and network equipment.

·         Record, track, and document the help desk request problem-solving process, including all successful and unsuccessful decisions made, and actions taken, through to final resolution.

·         Identify and learn appropriate software and hardware used and supported by the organization.

·         Perform hands-on fixes at the desktop level, including installing and upgrading software, installing hardware, implementing file backups, and configuring systems and applications.

·         Perform preventative maintenance, including checking and cleaning of Servers, workstations,  and peripherals.

·         Test fixes to ensure problem has been adequately resolved.

·         Perform post-resolution follow-ups to help requests.

·         Develop help sheets and frequently asked questions lists for end users.

·         Perform on-site analysis, diagnosis, and resolution of complex server and desktop problems and recommend and implement corrective solutions, including off-site repair for remote users as needed.

·         Assess the need for and implement performance upgrades to servers and workstations, including the installation of CPUs, I/O and NIC cards, hard disks, RAM, CD-ROMs, and so on.

·         Collaborate with LAN technicians/network administrators to ensure efficient operation of the company’s desktop computing environment.

·         Ensure that physical desktop connections (i.e. RJ-45 Ethernet jacks, RJ-11 telephone modem jacks, connectors between PCs and servers, etc.) are in proper working order.

·         Prepare tests and applications for monitoring server and desktop performance, and then provide performance statistics and reports.

·         Develop and maintain an inventory of all server, workstation, peripheral equipment network and security devices.

·         If necessary, liaise with third-party support and equipment vendors.

·         Aid in development of business continuity and disaster recovery plans, and maintain current knowledge of plan executables. Respond to emergency network outages in accordance with business continuity and disaster recovery plans.

·         Support development and implementation of networking projects and new technology installations

Knowledge & Experience

·         Experience with virtualization

·         Backup/Disaster Recovery for Windows systems

·         Hands-on hardware troubleshooting experience.

·         Knowledge of basic computer hardware.

·         Working technical knowledge of current protocols, operating systems, and standards, including Windows XP, Vista, 7, Server 2003, Server 2008, and TCP/IP.

·         Ability to operate tools, components, and peripheral accessories.

·         Able to read and understand technical manuals, procedural documentation, and OEM guides.

·         Ability to clearly communicate ideas to technical and non-technical audiences.

·         Extensive application support experience with Microsoft Office.

·         Exceptional written and oral communication skills.

·         Ability to develop and document policies and procedures.

·         Exceptional interpersonal skills, with a focus on rapport-building, listening, and questioning skills.

·         Keen attention to detail.

·         Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.

·         Ability to research system issues and products as required.

·         Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.

·         Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.

·         Highly self-motivated, with a high degree of detail orientation.

·         Ability to train and monitor the performance of tiered personnel assigned to them.

·         Develop strategies for improving the effectiveness and efficiencies of existing systems.

Work Conditions

·         On-call availability for 5 days per month.

·         Sitting for extended periods of time.

·         Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, hand and power tools, and to handle other computer components.

·         Lifting and transporting of heavy to moderately heavy objects, such as computers and peripherals.

·        Hourly rate of $10.00

·        Work days: Monday – Thursday (paid) and Sunday service support (unpaid)
