Frequently Asked Questions
Who can participate?
The FSCJ Student Research Conference is open to current FSCJ students. Students must commit to work with a faculty mentor from the appropriate discipline. Participating students must be willing to invest time in completing the research and preparing their presentation.
Why should I participate? What are the benefits?
The conference is an opportunity to present your unique research, improve your presentation skills, and engage in thoughtful dialogue with faculty, fellow panelists, and guests. In addition, presenting in the FSCJ Student Research Conference is a wonderful addition to your resume.
What type of projects should be submitted?
Students can submit an abstract of their scholarly work to present in either a paper presentation facilitated by faculty moderators or in a poster session. Both mediums must include original thought, research, and college-level writing and preparation. Click here for an example abstract submission.
How should I dress on the day of the presentation?
At the conference, professional business attire is encouraged. Appropriate dress for men includes slacks and a jacket, and women should wear a dress or suit. However, you will want to be comfortable and should wear comfortable shoes. Please bring a cardigan or jacket if you tend to get chilly.
When is the abstract deadline?
The draft deadline to submit an abstract is February 1, 2018. At this time all students will be assigned a mentor. The final deadline to submit an abstract is March 1, 2018.
How much time will I have for my presentation?
Students will have 15 minutes to present their research papers and an additional five minutes for a questions and answer session with the audience and faculty members. Students presenting papers can also share a PowerPoint presentation as a visual aid for their research. The poster session will occur science fair-style. Conference attendees will walk by the posters, and your poster should quickly and efficiently communicate your research. Unlike the fast pace of an oral presentation, a poster session allows viewers to study your information and discuss it with you one-on-one. You should also be prepared to give a short 5-10 minute presentation on your research.
