The University of Illinois College of Media and Illinois Public Media/WILL seek an IT Pro who wants to help build the future foundation of media and journalism online. We need someone with good communication skills and expertise in server administration, digital storage, content management systems, and web standards.

 

We’re determined to take public broadcasting and media education to the next level: combining the power of journalism, storytelling, and engagement with the reach and flexibility of Web services and online media. We seek a technologist dedicated to staying on the operational cutting edge while maintaining the systems at the core of our internet services. This position is key to enabling Illinois Public Media and the College of Media to flourish online. The right candidate will be able to make a significant impact on the organization.

 

Key skill areas include:

 

  • Virtual host administration
  • Web server administration
  • Database administration
  • Content management systems
  • Streaming media appliances and applications
  • File systems and backups

 

Required Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum one year of experience with virtual host administration such as Hyper-V or ESXi
  • Minimum three years of experience with Linux and Apache server administration
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with people who have a variety of technical backgrounds
  • Ability to look at the web technology landscape and make recommendations on the direction for investment

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Experience with streaming media server administration
  • SQL database server administration, especially MySQL
  • Knowledge and skills for both Linux- and Windows-based web server environments
  • Experience tuning web servers for best performance
  • Understanding of different storage technologies and the pros and cons of each
  • Hosting or administrating one or more content management systems such as Expression Engine, WordPress, or Drupal

 

This is a full-time, 40-hour per week academic professional position, with some schedule flexibility due to the nature of operations at IPM and the College.  The University of Illinois offers a generous benefits package, which includes ten paid holidays and one month of paid vacation annually, health, dental and life insurance, sick leave, a pension system, and tuition benefits.  Salary commensurate with experience but not less than $50,000.
