Recommended methods of finding an internship/job

Did you know that networking (knowing someone) is still the most popular way to break into the IT field? Here are some ways to help you in this area:

  • Let everyone know you are looking for an internship/job (friends, neighbors, church members, classmates, teachers, family, etc.)
  • Ask your acquaintances if they would put in a good word for you or introduce you to a manager in the IT department.
  • Many of the larger organizations have an internship program. Search the web site or contact the HR department to find out if the company has this. CSX, Citizen’s Insurance, and Blue Cross Blue Shield are a few that I know. The CSX one is for students in the Bachelors program. It may be of longer duration and more hours than the internship class requires.
  • Think about your dream company. Check with their HR department to see if they do internships. Otherwise, see if you can locate a web site that might list employees. Reach out to the IT director to see if you might volunteer.
  • Use LinkedIn (or sign up for this). LinkedIn is a way to stay connected with colleagues in the workforce.

Cook Technology Paid Internship

Hiring& Training Supported Self Managed Technicians St Aug Jax OP&Area (Jacksonville, Yulee, Baldwin & St. Augustine) hide this posting

compensation: $10 – $20/hour (based on completed work orders)
employment type: contract
internship

We are a small technology company that has been operating for over 16 years from Jacksonville Florida. We are direct and clear with our employees contractors and clients and this is our strength. Cook Tech is a supportive team techs who are friends as well as co workers.

The main strength of this job is that you will be able to see a lot of different technology and different types of companies in a short time. You are supported by help-desk from the companies that we work for and from your supervisor with Cook Technology. It it great for resume building.

If you are interested in working with us you will need:

1. Reliable Transportation
2. Smart Phone with enough data to send photos
3. Laptop

Whether you are an expert with computers, or a novice technician does not matter to us so much as the ability to take instructions from your lead (supervisor) and good communication skills. We are not looking for people who know everything about computers, but people who have the necessary aptitude and who will ask questions about things they are not sure about. You will always be supported in the field, and reliability is the key to success in this line of work.

We issue work orders during business hours and sometimes in the evenings, but you will have an option of whether you can take the calls when they are after 7pm. Sometimes they will pay more, and sometimes they will be with a team.

We schedule the work orders on a calendar and our techs go to the location and complete the task outlined and then email the paperwork that the site contact will sign. These work orders are then submitted for payment.

Payment ranges from 10 to 20 dollars an hour based on experience. When you complete work orders and the client is happy you will receive more work and raises quickly. We are looking for managers who will be able to select work orders and assign them with additional pay.

The amount of work we can send you will depend on many factors, but we will support you in getting enough work to earn quite a bit if you can follow the lead of your supervisor. The amount you can make is greatly determined by your willingness to take calls and ability to apply information that is provided by support.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. If you are interested, please send your resume to jobs AT cooktechnology DOT com for review.

We will contact you by phone for an initial interview and then schedule a time to meet in person.

Consider freelancing when breaking into IT and don’t forget Career Coach

Have you ever thought about freelancing to get your internship hours in or trying it to see if you might do your internship that way? There are web sites such as Work Market that allows you to enroll and go for jobs. One of my students repaired a cable and got over $50 for doing so. Another one I saw there was a flat fee for fixing laser printers (swapping out power supplies, motherboards, and something else) and PCs. It was $75 for each one you did. Great way to get experience for your resume and fit into some of your schedules.

Another tool is Career Coach you have access to through Connections. It tells of IT jobs and companies that are hiring right now in our area: https://fscj.emsicareercoach.com/
