Spotlight – Dr. Gary Killam, Interim Dean of Career Education

Dr. Killam joined the College in September of 2015 as the Associate Dean of Career Education and in November was appointed as the Interim Dean. Dr. Killam came to us from St. Johns River State College where he served as the Dean of Criminal Justice and Public Safety for the past six years and graduated from the Florida Chancellors Leadership Seminar.

He serves as the Co-Chair of the Florida Department of Education Advisory Committee for Law, Public Safety & Security, and Government & Public Administration, and is the treasurer for the Florida Criminal Justice Educators Association (FCJEA). Dr. Killam has 32 years in law enforcement serving as the Deputy Chief for the Duval County School Police Department and as the Major with the Davie Police Department in South Florida. He currently is a reserve officer with the St. Augustine Police Department. Dr. Killam is recognized as an expert in the field of gangs and has presented nationally on the topic. He is an adjunct faculty member at Nova Southeastern University and St. Johns River State College. Dr. Killam developed his passion for teaching as a police officer and continued to pursue teaching to recruits in the police academy as well as a college adjunct.

Dr. Killam holds a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from Nova Southeastern University, a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Phoenix, a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Nova Southeastern University, an Associate degree in Police Science from Broward College, and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Dr. Killam has received numerous awards to include the Nova Southeastern University Distinguished Alumni Award, Florida Gang Investigators Association Inaugural “Gary Killam” Career Service Award, and the FCJEA Outstanding Service award.

Gary is a true Floridian, born, raised in South Florida, and relocated to Jacksonville in 2007. He enjoys woodworking, outdoor activities and most of all, spending time with family and friends.
